England’s World Cup quarter-final curse continued to haunt the Three Lions as they crashed out at the hands of France in Qatar.

The cross-channel rivals met in a blockbuster clash as a spot against Morocco in the semi-finals alluringly beckoned.

As reigning world champions, France came into the clash as favourites, but they were far from having it all their own way.

The blue-touch paper was ignited when Aurelian Tchouameni lashed home a venomous strike from distance to banish to the shadows what had been a cagey opening spell.

France then managed the game, with some help from the referee, well until the break, keeping England at arm’s length.

However, England came out firing in the second stanza and, after a brilliant Bukayo Saka was felled in the box, Harry Kane stepped up to thump home a crucial equaliser.

England began to pile the pressure on the French, sensing an opportunity to dump the reigning champions clean out of Qatar.

Sadly for England, France’s gaggle of superstars had their own say with Antoine Griezmann delivering a quite stunning cross right onto the head of Olivier Giroud.

England refused to be beaten, however and, when Mason Mount was bundled over in the box, Kane was given yet another golden opportunity to restore parity.

What followed will plague the skipper’s nightmares for years to come as, to the crescendo of hearts breaking nationwide, he blazed woefully high and over the bar.

The collective groan across the country was audible as fans watched a potentially glorious moment evaporate right before their eyes.

For one watching party, there was an additional guest to witness one of England’s most painful moments in modern history.

According to a video doing the rounds on TikTok, a Dominos delivery driver arrived at a customer’s address just as the penalty was about to be taken.

He asked if it would be alright if he came in to watch the moment and the residents duly obliged.

Sadly, as the footage shows, he may have wished he had never invited himself in.

You can imagine there were similar scenes of crushing disappointment across the length and breadth of the country.

However, for this poor lad, who probably had to return to delivering pizzas on a freezing cold night, it was a thoroughly forgettable evening.
